Stoves
Next to the refrigerator the stove is probably the most important large appliance in the kitchen. While stove technology evolved so that it has become much easier to control the temperature its overall purpose has remained the same, to heat and cook food.
We have been enjoying the benefits of cooked food since the days of cavemen but the safety and convieniece of indoor cooking is where the stove shines. Open fire cooking is dangerous, produces too much smoke and is low in effienciency. Modern day stoves combat all of this by providing high effiency electric or natural gas elements that make cooking food easy.
When shopping for a stove there are a few things to consider before making a purchase, the most important is based on how your kitchen is set up. The main choice lies between purchasing either an electric stove or a gas stove. Both have benefits but it is ultimately up to what your kitchen is outfitted to handle and your personal preference.
Electric stoves are by far the most common as they do not require the kitchen to be outfitted with a gas supply. Many however do require a special higher voltage plug outlet available but most kitchens will have this. Electric stoves are said to heat food more evenly but as they use electricity it is important to make sure you look for a unit that is energy efficient. Electric stoves tend to be less cost efficient then their gas counterparts; however with the instability of the world’s oil supply this is up for debate.
Gas stoves are just as safe as electric stoves but require the kitchen to be outfitted with a gas supply. Gas stoves heat up more quickly and allow for greater control over temperature so they make an excellent choice for the chef in you. The only electricity required for gas stoves is the spark that ignites the gas making them highly cost efficient in terms of your electricity bill.
The oven should be one of the factors in decision making process when shopping for a stove. Depending on how much baking you do the size and efficiency of the oven should be an important element of your decision. A larger sized oven will require more electricity to heat and as a result will add to your monthly utility bill so make sure to choose a model that fits the needs of your family and cooking habits.
When shopping for a stove don’t forget to factor in its size and appearance. There are many styles to choose from so make sure you find one that matches your lifestyle and kitchen decor.
