Refrigerators
The refrigerator has become the centre piece of every kitchen and rightfully so. This refrigerator keeps food cold and doing so allows it to stay fresh for longer periods of time without having to rely on preservatives. Before refrigerators the storage of fresh food was next to impossible but since the early 1900’s this food cooling technology permanently changed how we are able to store our leftovers.
Refrigerators work by maintaining an internal temperature of around 5’C. Keeping the contents at a low temperature greatly slows the growth of bacteria in food. Doing so allows food to be kept fresh for longer periods of time, much longer than when stored at room temperature.
All refrigerators work in the same way, so when shopping for a fridge its best to look for the options that suit the needs of you and your family.
Size is usually the first thing to consider when purchasing a new refrigerator. The capacity of a fridge is usually measured in cubic feet or litres. The sizes of fridges range from small personal fridges often called bar fridges to full size fridges in excess of 600 litres or around 22 cubic feet. The size you need depends on how much food you plan on storing, how often you grocery shop and how many people reside in your household. If you eat and grocery shop on a regular basis you may not need as much storage as someone who shops only once a month. If you find that you are more likely to store food for longer periods of time you may consider a unit with a larger freezer section.
With today’s ever increasing cost of living it is very important to choose a unit that is energy efficient. All of today’s appliances are given an Energy Star rating. A smaller number means that it uses less electricity and as a result will cost less per year to operate. This should always be an important factor when deciding what fridge to purchase.
Many people forget to measure the available space in their kitchen before heading to the appliance shop to buy a fridge. It is very important to make sure that your kitchen has the right amount of space for the refrigerator you are considering buying. Always make sure to take into account the room available above and behind the fridge. Many people have cabinets that extend above the fridge and it can often make for a snug fit. Don’t forget that you will need to open the fridge doors, so make sure your kitchen is big enough to accommodate a fridge with a large door opening.
Fridges have come a long way as far as features go and there are many options now available to the consumer. Many fridges have the option of ice cube makers and water dispensers built into the unit. There are even some units that have LCD televisions and DVD players built into the front. These features are handy but should not be the basis for your purchase.
Take into account the available storage space, shelving options and freezer size and position when purchasing a fridge and should be happy with your decision.
