There are so many different gizmos out there claiming to be an absolute requirement for your kitchen that it can seemingly cost thousands of dollars to get your kitchen set up. The key is not to let all the hype fool you. There are a few basic fixtures that all kitchens should have and beyond that anything else you need is really just suited to the style of cook who is at the helm. So let's start with the basics: your pots and pans, your cutlery and your dinner ware.

Pots & Pans - When shopping for pots and pans it is not always a good idea to save on your expenses here. You'll want to invest in a good heavy set with a thick metal base. The reason for this is that when you're cooking (especially on electric range stoves) with thin based pans, the heat will not distribute as evenly as their heavier counterparts. The result is a pan surfaces that can burn some parts of your food while not adequately cooking other parts.

Cutlery - Like the pots and pans, you'll want something relatively thick. The money you'll save on a cheap set of knives and forks can quickly be eroded once you need to purchase the replacements for all the bent and broken pieces. With regards to utility kitchen knives, all you need to start off with is a bread knife with a serrated edge, a chef knife (also known as a French knife) which as a long straight blade, and a couple of stake knives.

Dinner Ware - Also known as "crockery" your dinner wear is basically your plates, bowls and cups. There are a lot of options out there and the only difference you're really paying for is aesthetic appeal. Some materials will cost more than others but nearly all are susceptible to damage. In fact it is a lot of the cheaper forms of dinner ware like those made out of high density plastics that are the most durable. If you're to save some coin then this would be a good place to start. Of course if style is your main purchasing factor then your options are limitless. Many of the major department stores carry upscale brands but if you're looking for something truly remarkable then you're best bet is one of the many niche stores that cater to the high end.
