Kitchen Knives

Kitchen knives come in a few varieties and every kitchen should have at least a few. Each one has a specific cutting task although generally speaking one could do the job of many.

The standard kitchen knife or butter knife is the cutting staple of every flatware set. Butter knives are usually fairly dull with only a mildly serrated blade. These knives are generally considered pretty safe as they don’t have a sharp pointed end and the serrated edge is designed to be safe. These knives are good for cutting soft foods, spreading peanut butter or margarine and with a bit of work can cut through other more difficult tasks. Butter knives are the standard knife that should be set with a regular meal.

Steak knives are more suited for cutting tough meats. The edges are highly serrated and the end is sharp. Quality steak knives tend to have a thicker blade and are less prone to bending. Consider a stainless steel set when shopping for steak knives as cheaper ones tend to rust. You may also consider a steak knife set that comes with its own sharpener as blades will become dull over time.

If you server a lot of guests you may consider purchasing some cheese knives. These knives are designed to slice and spread various types of cheese and tend to have no serrated edges. Cheese knives tend to be a little more expensive as they are more of a specialty knife but if you are serving guests a fancy plate of cheese why not use a fancy knife?

There are various types of food preparation knives that you may consider if you are a more advanced chef. There are butcher knives, fish knives, vegetable knives and meat knives. Depending on the type of cutting you plan on doing there is probably a knife for you. Always consider the quality of the product and pay attention to the knives construction. With a bit of comparison shopping you should be able to find the right product at the right price.
