Can Openers

The first can opener was patented in the mid 19th century but it wasn’t until 1870 when the first cutting wheel can opener was designed by William Lyman. Since then manual can openers have not changed much with style of dual handled grip still being used today. In the 1960’s the electric can opener hit the market. These featured the same cutting wheel style as the manual variety and held the cans in place with a lever. The two main models you will come across are wall mounted units that are usually fixed beneath the cabinetry and upright units which stand free on the countertop.
