Garbage Disposal Units
A garbage disposal unit, often called a garburator is an electric device installed under the sink that grinds and shreds food into pieces small enough to flow through the drain. These devices can often be hooked up to a dishwasher to allow its food waste to pass through as well. Garbage disposal units are very convenient for disposing of small food waste such as the peelings from potatoes or carrots.
Garbage disposal units are installed to the sink drain and the unit is usually activated by flicking a switch. These units engage a motor which spins a blade that chops of the food waste into bits small enough to pass through the standard plumbing. Garbage disposal units are often quite loud to use however as they are only used intermittently the noise generally isn’t much of a problem.
Garbage disposal units are generally considered a convenience device and for a long time were only afforded to those better off financially. As the technology has been around since the 1920’s and 1930’s it has become much more affordable. Almost half of all homes in the United States have a garbage disposal and that number is increasing at a steady rate.
When shopping for a garbage disposal unit the factors to consider depend entirely on the room available under your sink. A larger unit will come with a larger strong motor able to chop up more food at a time. While a larger unit may sound more appealing the loss of storage space under the sink may turn away some.
Take your time when shopping for a garbage disposal and select the one that meets your price range and waste disposal requirements.
